It looks like the same stuff in the tin. It goes on with the same roller. So why does one cost more, and why does everyone tell you not to use them interchangeably?
The answer sits in the chemistry, and the consequences of getting it wrong are more expensive than the paint.
They’re Built for Different Enemies
Interior paint has to survive scuffing, cleaning, kitchen steam and sunlight coming through a window. It also has to not smell too much while you’re living in the house.
Exterior paint has to survive UV bombardment, rain, temperature swings from freezing nights to forty degree afternoons, wind driven grit, mould, salt and the constant expansion and contraction of the surface underneath it.
Those are completely different problems, so the formulations diverge.
The Resin Difference
Resin is the binder that holds the paint film together and sticks it to the surface. It’s the single biggest difference between the two types.
Interior paints use rigid resins. A hard film resists scuffing, marking and repeated cleaning, which is exactly what you want on a hallway wall.
Exterior paints use softer, more flexible resins. Building materials move constantly outdoors. Timber swells with moisture and shrinks in dry heat. Render expands in the sun. A rigid film cracks under that movement, so exterior paint is formulated to stretch and recover.
This is the core reason you can’t swap them. Interior paint outside will crack and peel within a season or two, because it can’t move with the substrate.
UV Resistance
Exterior paints contain UV stabilisers and use pigments chosen for lightfastness. This is why quality exterior paint holds its colour for years while cheaper products fade to a chalky version of themselves.
Interior paints have minimal UV protection because they don’t need it. Put them outside and colours fade fast, particularly reds, blues and deep tones.
Mould and Mildew Resistance
Exterior paints include biocides and fungicides to resist mould, algae and lichen. Anyone on the southern side of a house in a damp area knows how quickly growth appears without them.
Some interior paints have mould resistance too, particularly those made for bathrooms and kitchens, but at levels intended for occasional condensation rather than constant outdoor moisture.
Volatile Organic Compounds
Here’s where using exterior paint indoors becomes a problem.
Exterior paints typically contain higher levels of VOCs and additives that help durability outdoors. In an enclosed room, those release into the air over an extended period.
The result is a strong lingering smell, potential irritation for anyone sensitive, and a genuinely worse indoor air quality outcome. Interior paints are formulated with much lower VOCs precisely because people live and sleep in the rooms they’re used in.
Low VOC and zero VOC interior products are widely available now and worth choosing, especially for bedrooms and children’s rooms.
Washability and Scrub Resistance
Interior paint is designed to be cleaned. You can wipe a mark off a low sheen interior wall without burnishing the finish.
Exterior paint isn’t engineered for that, because outside, rain does the cleaning. Scrub exterior paint on an interior wall and you’ll often mark or shine the surface.
What Happens If You Use the Wrong One
Interior Paint Outside
Cracking as the substrate moves. Peeling as moisture gets behind the film. Rapid fading. Mould growth. Chalking, where the surface turns powdery to the touch.
You’ll usually see the first problems within twelve months, and the fix is to strip it all back, which is far more work than doing it right the first time.
Exterior Paint Inside
Persistent odour, sometimes for weeks. Higher VOC exposure in a space with limited ventilation. A softer film that marks more easily and is harder to clean. Longer drying and curing times.
It won’t fall off the wall, but you’ve spent more money for a worse result in every way that matters indoors.
What About Interior/Exterior Products?
Some products are labelled for both. These are usually formulated toward the exterior end, with flexibility and durability prioritised.
They can be genuinely useful for spaces that sit in between, like a garage, a laundry with poor ventilation, a covered outdoor room, or a shed. For ordinary living areas, a dedicated interior product will give you a better finish, lower odour and better washability.
Choosing the Right Sheen
Sheen matters as much as the interior versus exterior decision.
Inside
Flat and matt hide surface imperfections well and suit ceilings and low traffic areas, but they mark easily and are hard to clean.
Low sheen is the general purpose choice for most walls. It offers a good balance of appearance and washability.
Satin and semi gloss suit kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and high traffic hallways. More cleanable, but they highlight wall imperfections.
Gloss and semi gloss are standard for trim, doors and skirting because they take knocks and clean up well.
Outside
Low sheen is most common for walls and render because it hides surface irregularities.
Semi gloss and gloss are used on timber trim, doors, window frames and fascia, where durability and cleanability matter more than hiding imperfections.
Surface Preparation Differs Too
Exterior work requires more preparation. Pressure washing, scraping loose material, treating mould, filling cracks, and priming bare timber or masonry.
Skipping preparation outdoors is far more punishing than skipping it indoors, because the weather will find every weakness.
